Gardening Teks: Describe the positive and negative impacts both human and natural activities that can occur in a school garden

Social Studies gardening teks:

3.15(E) create written and visual material such as stories, pictures, maps, and geographic organizers to express ideas.
3.3(A) describe similarities and differences I the physical environment, including climate, landforms, natural resources, and natural hazards.

The digital media from the multimedia fair that we will be using will be the digital poster K-2. Students will use the adobe express website to use the text to image to create their own school garden. They will then use google slide to create their digital poster. This is a great way for students to organize their ideas on the poster in a creative way. The students will research the positive and negative impacts that could occur in a school garden. Then they will take that information and create a digital poster of those impacts.

Materials:
  • access to a phone/tablet,
  • google slides,
  • adobe express: text to image,
  • poster example

ISTE Standards:
5a: Evaluate and use CS and CT curricula, resources, and tools that account for learner variability to meet the needs of all students.

5b: Empower students to select personally meaningful computational projects.

These iste standards allow students to express their learning in a creative way that is meaningful to them as individuals. They will use online resources to create their own poster of a school garden that is different for each student.

Service Project Preparation:

How will you exemplify a learner response or two?

I will exemplify a learner response by asking questions before, during, and after the activity. This is to actively engage the students and to see if they are understanding what they are doing.

How will you make your activity DIGITALLY creative and collaborative among the participants?

I will make my activity digitally creative and collaborative by using the adobe express website, and having students put their poster on a group google slide.

How will you promote and support learners toward a CCISD Multimedia fair submission?

I will promote and support leaners by explaining what my partner and I did to create our activity. Then, show students how technology is a great tool to use in school and everyday activities.

What question and sentence prompts will you use to demonstrate Growth Mindset and Appreciative Inquiry facilitation within your activity?

Some question and sentence prompts I will use are "Does anyone know what adobe express offers?", "What would change if you added or took away different key words from the text to image?"

Star Hero Reflection
So, my partner and I had to be flexible a lot with this project. We were originally supposed to have third graders who had their own tablets, however we ended up with kindergarteners who had no technology whatsoever. Luckily my partner and I had our laptops so we just split the group up in two so they could all see what was happening online.
Then, the adobe express was not working on the school wifi, so we had to change plans again. We ended up still using the google slide but let the students draw an item they would like to see in their garden. We had using the painting tool found on just about every laptop.
Overall, everything ended up going smoothly, and the students had fun. There were some obstacles my partner and I had to face, but it all worked out in the end.

  1. Hi Jackie, I really liked that you put all the materials on your blog post to have an idea of what you and your partner will be doing. I like the fact that the students can use different kinds of programs for the activity that they will be doing. The standards that you have chosen go great with the activity that you have chosen to do as well as the TEK you have picked. I cannot wait to see how the students' posters come out.

  2. I love your idea of creating a poster on Google Slides. Honestly, I didn't know what text to image was so I had to google it and that is such a cool tool! Exposing students to this kind of technology is a great way to prepare them for future projects they may have in class. 5a was an excellent standard choice, it was the first one I thought of when I was reading your lesson activity.

  3. Hey Jackie, your blog and portfolio are well organized and informative. I especially like the way you organized your portfolio; the readers know well what to read. For each activity, you emphasized well the ISTE standards and that is amazing. You did well in explaining why and how specific standards are aligned with your activities. Keep up the good work!
